The practical view

FastAPI automatically generates an **OpenAPI (v3.1)** JSON specification from your route handlers, path parameters, type annotations, and Pydantic schemas. It serves interactive Swagger UI docs at `/docs`, ReDoc at `/redoc`, and the raw JSON schema at `/openapi.json`. You can customize endpoint metadata using `summary`, `description`, `response_description`, `tags`, and `status_code` directly in `@app.get()`.

Legacy vs modern

Manual Swagger YAML Documentation vs FastAPI Automatic Generation

Writing manual Swagger YAML drifts from reality; FastAPI generates 100% synchronized OpenAPI specs from type hints.

before → after
Manual Swagger YAML (Drifts from Code)
# ❌ swagger.yaml must be updated manually on every code change
FastAPI Automatic OpenAPI Generation
@app.get('/items/{id}', summary='Get item') def read(id: int): ... // ✅ NEW: Auto-generated from types

Interview gotchas

Context

Interviewers test your knowledge of production deployment hardening.

The mechanical answer

Pass `docs_url=None`, `redoc_url=None`, and `openapi_url=None` when instantiating `FastAPI()`: ```python app = FastAPI(docs_url=None, redoc_url=None, openapi_url=None) ``` This completely disables the documentation routes and hides the OpenAPI JSON schema from public discovery in production.

Trap

Disabling `docs_url` but leaving `openapi_url='/openapi.json'` still exposes your full API surface and internal schema definitions.
