The practical view

FastAPI includes `BackgroundTasks` for running tasks *after* returning an HTTP response: `def send_email(email: str): ...`. In your route: `@app.post('/signup') def signup(bg: BackgroundTasks): bg.add_task(send_email, 'user@test.com'); return {'msg': 'Signed up'}`. The user receives the JSON response immediately, and FastAPI executes `send_email` in the background.

The same idea in other frameworks

fastapi equivalent
`background_tasks.add_task(send_notification, user.id)`.

Legacy vs modern

Blocking In-Request Execution vs FastAPI BackgroundTasks

Waiting for email delivery in the request handler delays response latency; `BackgroundTasks` sends the response immediately.

before → after
Synchronous Blocking Handler
send_email(); return {'status': 'ok'}; // ❌ Delays HTTP response by 2 seconds
FastAPI BackgroundTasks
background_tasks.add_task(send_welcome_email, email); return {'status': 'ok'}; // ✅ NEW

Interview gotchas

Context

Interviewers test your ability to choose between in-process tasks and distributed queues.

The mechanical answer

Because `BackgroundTasks` run **in-memory within the server process**, any tasks queued or executing when a server restarts, crashes, or is terminated by a container orchestrator (Kubernetes) are **permanently lost with zero retry**. For critical operations (payment processing, video transcoding, document generation), you must use an external broker-backed queue like Celery or RabbitMQ.

Trap

Never use `BackgroundTasks` for mission-critical tasks that require persistent retry guarantees.
